The Perils of Texting While Driving

Happy Monday everyone, how was your weekend? Mine was very relaxing as I spent the weekend in Champaign with my boyfriend, Aubry. If you’ve read my last blog, you’ll see that I was anxiously awaiting the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. I saw it Saturday night, and of course, I absolutely loved it! I drove back to Chicago yesterday morning, and I’m going to admit that I actually tweeted about the film while driving home. How many of you text (as well as tweet) while driving?

I’m guilty of doing so many times in the past, but I’ve heard of fatalities regarding texting and driving and I’ve realized it just isn’t worth it. I admit that I tweeted while driving yesterday, but no one was in front of me and I was driving straight on 57 North. I also text while at red lights, but I swear that’s it! I know what you’re all thinking: these are just excuses. They absolutely are, and I don’t want to continue this habit that could result in harming myself or others.

Here are some startling facts that I found on the website, textingndriving.com:

– 80% of crashes, and 65% of near crashes, involved some form of driver inattention within 3 seconds of the incident

– 57% of American drivers admit to texting behind the wheel; 34% of teens admit to texting while driving whereas 27% of all adults report texting while driving

– the US Department of Transportation reports that distracted driving played a role in nearly 6,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries in 2009
